     Evelyn Pellaton conceived the idea for Friends of the Cayucos Library on September 1, 1992, and a steering committee meeting was held at the Cayucos Library on September 7, 1992. Although the Cayucos Library has been in existence since the mid-70's, this was the first attempt by the community to aid the library.

     The Purpose of the Friends is to make the public aware of the library as an important institution in the life of the community and to ensure its continued presence and growth.

     The Objectives of the Friends are:

To maintain an organization interested in libraries.
To make people aware of how the library can benefit them and to encourage them to take advantage of the benefits.
To encourage all citizens of Cayucos to become members of the organization.
To encourage gifts, endowments and memorials for the library.
To provide direct financial assistance for the purchase of items not funded through the library budget.
To work with the library to enhance its services and facilities for the community.
To sponsor library related programs and activities that contribute to the cultural opportunities in the community.
To serve as a liaison for the community with the County Library Board and the California Friends of the Library.

     As of the end of 1999 the Friends counted 1 youth, 17 individual, 33 family, 38 patron, 62 life and 1 honorary memberships. The Board of Directors has 5 officers, 13 standing committee chairs and 13 members-at-large.

     In 1997 the Cayucos Library made the move from the 350 sq. ft. space it occupied in the Cayucos Veterans Memorial Building to the 1700 sq. ft. space it now enjoys in a free-standing formerly commercial building on Ocean Avenue. This accomplishment was due entirely to the Friends and the Cayucos Library has increased its circulation by approximately 75% as a result.

     The current focus of the Friends is to provide more open hours at the library for its patrons and various fund raisers have and will be had to this end.

     The Friends always welcome new members. It's the best deal in town and as easy as stopping by the library to pick up an application. Support Your Local Library!!! It's a good thing!
